President Donald Trump was midway through a Myrtle Beach rally for Sen. Darline Graham on Friday night when the room stopped belonging only to him.
About 20 minutes into his remarks at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, a man in the crowd stood and began shouting. Trump paused at the podium. Cameras found the disruption: a protester in a black T-shirt with “KILL YOUR LOCAL PEDOPHILE” in large white letters across the back. Nearby, a supporter in an American-flag shirt raised both arms and flipped the protester off with both hands. The crowd answered with boos and a “USA” chant. Security moved in and escorted the heckler out. Reports later said a second protester was also removed.
Trump did not linger on the shirt. “That’s all right,” he said as the man was led away. “That person’s going home to mom, gonna get scolded, because mom is voting for us. You know? Mom is voting.” Then he picked up where he had left off.
The stop was meant to lift Graham, appointed after the sudden death of her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, and now facing Rep. Ralph Norman in Tuesday’s Republican Senate runoff. Trump asked the crowd to “pretend, please, that I’m on the ballot,” argued a midterm loss would bring impeachment talk, and praised Graham’s focus on costs even after a debate stumble on national security. He also promised movement on a long-sought highway serving the Grand Strand.
The interruption lasted only a minute or so. Still, it briefly shifted the frame from the president and the candidate to an ordinary spectator and a slogan on a shirt. Some viewers treated the protest as a stand against power. Others saw a disruption at a campaign event that the audience and security quickly shut down. Either way, the pictures traveled farther than the rest of the speech.
Graham still needed votes on Tuesday. Trump still needed the party behind his pick. For a few televised seconds, neither of them held the room alone.
