With the 2026 U.S. midterm elections approaching, new data discussed by CNN’s chief data analyst Harry Enten is drawing attention to the level of motivation among different groups of voters.
According to figures presented by Enten in late September, 71% of Democrats said they were certain to vote in the 2026 midterm elections. The same percentage — 71% — of MAGA Republicans said they were certain to vote.
The numbers are notable because voter motivation can play an important role in midterm elections. Unlike presidential elections, midterms typically receive lower turnout, meaning differences in who actually shows up to vote can have a significant effect on the composition of the electorate.
The latest figures suggest that the highly engaged portion of the Republican coalition is not showing signs of reduced enthusiasm. Enten’s analysis specifically focused on MAGA Republicans, rather than every Republican voter. This distinction is important because the Republican electorate includes voters with different levels of support for President Donald Trump and the broader MAGA movement.
The CNN data also examined Trump’s standing among MAGA Republicans. According to the figures discussed by Enten, Trump received 99% of the MAGA Republican vote in the 2024 presidential election, while his current approval among that group was reported at 98%. Enten described the difference as showing little change in support within that particular group.
Another important part of the discussion involves Republican voters who do not identify as MAGA Republicans. Earlier in September, Enten said that MAGA Republicans were highly motivated to vote, while non-MAGA Republicans showed substantially lower motivation in the data he presented. At that time, he cited 59% of MAGA Republicans and 60% of Democrats as extremely motivated to vote.
That distinction means the 71% figure should not be interpreted as saying that 71% of all Republicans are certain to vote. It specifically refers to the MAGA Republican group measured in the data.
The numbers have already generated competing political interpretations. Supporters of the Republican movement have pointed to the figures as evidence that the party’s core Trump-aligned voters remain highly engaged. Others have emphasized that turnout motivation among the broader Republican coalition is a different question, particularly among Republicans who do not identify with MAGA.
The data therefore provides one specific picture of the 2026 midterm electorate: Democrats and MAGA Republicans reported identical levels of certainty about voting, at 71% each, according to the CNN figures presented by Harry Enten.
Whether that reported motivation translates into actual turnout will only become clear after voters cast their ballots. Self-reported intention to vote is not the same thing as confirmed participation, and the final electorate will depend on registration, turnout, campaign activity, voting rules, and the choices made by millions of individual voters.
For now, the 71%-71% comparison is giving political observers another data point to watch as the 2026 midterm campaign enters its final stage.
